Nancy Sings Billie

Hello, I am Nancy and I sing Billie Holiday songs as a tribute to her great music.  I sing Billie Holiday songs the way a pianist would play Beethoven or Bach.  A pianist would practice and practice and practice and recite, recite and recite, and listen and listen and listen. She would also follow each nuance of sound, emotion, motive, and style as closely to the composer's layout as possible. She would attempt to excite a response from the listener with the composition as much as possible, as would the original composition. She would attempt to deliver the essence of the intention of the original artist with the composers feeling, tempo, ideas (which can only be imagined from work and study) and convey those points and objectives based upon her understanding of the composer and of the composition. This is totally and diametrically opposed to imitating, or copying a vocalist. I can imitate many vocalists, singers and song stylists, but with Billie"s music
I do something special, I recreate.

A recreation of an original composition must first, be worthy of respect and should be treated as such, therefore, imitations are out of line because it is inappropriate and disrespectful.  This is a note to many vocalist who place a gardenia in their hair and then attempt to recreate a style of singing which they have not listened to carefully, nor mainly understand.  It will be better to just sing her songs in your own natural voice and at least let the listeners know that you; you do know the music; you understand the lyrics; and you have some relationship to the song.  You see Billie is telling a story when she composes.  A story has a beginning,a middle and and end.  It has a plot, a character (s), and sometimes a moral..

The demand for Billie's music elicits many imitators, so the existence of the many attempts by other singers is necessary as there is a short supply of soulful singers who really would care to make such a sacrifice, sometimes to the extent of their own voice.  It takes one to know one as the old adage says.  When following a master the student will eventually find her own self.

I enjoy this music to the point that it is what I do very well.  I can transverse towards my own style when ever I please, it's just that I have no particular desire or need to.  I don't mind the lack or originality, because any thing I want to say has already been said and it's still relevant today. Besides I am truly original because no one else can do what I do, as well as I can do.  Does this sound like a challenge? Put up, or shut up. In the mention let's have a song - shall we?
